Perth Amboy Couple Named Hometown Heroes

May 22, 2007 -- Perth Amboy residents Bob and Peggy Schmerker have spent a lifetime helping others.

Last month, the retired school teachers were honored by the United Way of Central New Jersey, which named them Hometown Heroes in the family category for their volunteer work at the Roosevelt Care Center. The Schmerkers have received numerous recognitions from Roosevelt throughout the years.

"Bob and Peggy are perfect examples of how volunteering can bring families closer together," said Gloria Aftanski, chief professional officer at United Way of Central New Jersey. "They clearly bring enthusiasm to all they do, whether at home, work or volunteering."

Joanne Franklin, director of recreation at the Roosevelt Care Center, nominated the couple for the award, calling them a spunky pair who is never afraid to speak up and always happy to assist in any way they can.

"Peggy and Bob make a wonderful team," Joanne wrote in her nomination. "They embody the Yin and the Yang of the perfect volunteer."

Bob arrived at RCC 10 years ago, where he became an instant hit - especially with the ladies.

The former music teacher escorts the ladies to and from the beauty parlor and even helps them with removing curlers.

In addition to his duties at the salon, Bob takes residents to bingo and church services.

"I get to meet a lot of different people," he said. "I try to be positive because I realize residents look forward to these activities."

Bob is not only a volunteer; he also helps recruit other volunteers. His first recruit was his wife.

Peggy assists the recreation department with office duties, helps other volunteers, and lends a hand to whomever is in need. She jokes that she is the only volunteer with an office.

Bob and Peggy said volunteering has been a truly positive experience.

"Seeing people in nursing homes is not so scary," said Peggy, adding that she and Bob would consider Roosevelt for themselves.
