Volunteers Wanted To Help Families Through Grief Process
March 27, 2006 – The Barbara E. Cheung Memorial Hospice, located on the campus of Roosevelt Care Center in Edison, is looking for volunteers to help families going through the grieving process.
“Volunteers are an integral part of the interdisciplinary team that administers end-of-life care to patients and their families,” said Jill Zhou, LCSW, volunteer coordinator for the Hospice. “Volunteers can run errands, offer support, provide music therapy and compliment the work of the clinical care providers. The presence of a volunteer communicates to the families that the volunteer is here because they want to be here, and that is very meaningful.”
Zhou said the Hospice volunteers are needed to help families, visit patients, console the bereaved or help in the office.
Hospice staff administer their programs at the six-bed, homelike building on the Roosevelt campus or at the homes of a patient or their loved ones.
To ensure that all volunteers are equipped for the challenge of working with the dying and their families, the Barbara E. Cheung Memorial Hospice hosts a 12-hour educational course. Workshops, videos and lectures are completed in four or five weekly sessions.
For more information, call Zhou at 732-321-9335.
