Cut It and Leave It
"Grasscycle" For a Healthier Lawn: Leave short grass
clippings on the lawn rather than bagging them and dragging
them to the curb.
Saves Your Time, Money, & Your Town's Money! Experts
say 35 percent of our lawn-care time is spent getting rid of
clippings. Grasscycled lawns need less water and fertilizer,
and you don’t have to buy lawn waste bags. And your town
saves the disposal cost of your lawn clippings.
Grasscycling Works Because:
• Short clippings act as natural fertilizer, shelter tender grass
roots from the sun and conserve moisture. The result is a
healthier, greener lawn.
• Grasscycled lawns are more resistant to weeds and certain
lawn diseases.
• Grasscycling does not cause thatch. Short clippings
decompose in a few days. Thatch — dead grass roots
and stems — is the result of overwatering, overfertilizing
and cutting your lawn too short.
Call (800) 488-MCIA (6242) for a brochure. For information
on grasscycling: Call Rutgers Cooperative Extension
(732) 398-5260, or visit www.rce.rutgers.edu.
Shred It!
Middlesex County residents are invited to recycle old documents and confidential files safely and securely at mobile shredding events scheduled throughout the year. Bring old files, receipts, bills, financial statements and any documents that have not been recycled due to confidentiality concerns and watch them get shredded on-site. Call the County Division of Solid Waste Management, (732) 745-4170, for dates and locations.
Book Smart
Students throughout the County are getting hands-on recycling education with the introduction
of a book recycling program sponsored by the MCIA and the County. Outdated hardcover and softcover books
that can no longer be used, sold or given away are
being recycled in this program. Students remove the hard covers from books and then reap the rewards:
The recycling processor pays for each ton recycled.

Reuse It Again!
Middlesex County's Donation Recycling Directory
This free directory can help you donate your unwanted
goods – such as “gently used” appliances, furniture, infant car
seats and strollers, computers and clothing – to Middlesex County organizations that reuse them to help our neighbors.
The directory also includes a list of dry cleaning shops that
accept hangers for recycling and information on other County recycling opportunities.
The first section of the book is organized by commodity. If you
have an item you no longer need and wish to donate it, this
section lists all the organizations which accept various items
and also lists organizations alphabetically so you can locate a
specific organization you may wish to receive your donation.
The book also contains details on county recycling programs
for items such as grass, batteries, paint and tires.
For a Free Copy: You can print the guide (requires Acrobat
Reader) on the web site at www.mciauth.com or call
(800) 488-MCIA (6242). Multiple copies of the directory
are available for clubs or community organizations.
